About the Image

A highly improvised test rig built in 2003 by MIT undergraduate researcher Philip Bramsen (below, wearing his creation) to investigate electrode geometries for measuring foot elevation with capacitive sensing provided appropriately-themed artistic inspiration from which to evolve the BSN 2006 logo image. Philip used an evaluation kit meant for automotive applications, which although effective for testing, made an ungainly yet fascinating graft onto his sneaker. This system was eventually incorporated into a compact wireless sensor package for gait analysis, described at http://www.media.mit.edu/resenv/gaitshoe.html.
